Chain map

Seven tiers, raw input to end demand. Click a segment on the rail, or a tier in the list, to read what the desk has counted at that step — and what it still cannot count.

Reading the map

A tier is narrow when one node carries enough of it that its loss cannot be covered inside the substitution window. Two tiers here qualify.

Tier 3 of 7Narrow tier

Tooling and metrology

Lithography, deposition, etch, inspection. The narrowest step in the chain sits inside the optics of one tool class, and beneath that, in a mirror-polishing capability held by a single supplier chain.

Failure mode

A shipment permit is refused or delayed. There is no second tool; there is a slower tool and a lost node generation.

Chokepoint ledger
TierStepCarried bySubstituteIf it stops
3Mirror polishing and optical assembly for advanced lithography1 supplier60 m+A node generation is deferred, industry-wide, and no substitute is qualified in the window
5High-bandwidth stacking and interposer capacity— lines24–30 mDie pile up as unrecognised inventory; the slip is reported three tiers away
5Build-up substrate at the required layer count— firms18–24 mPackaging lines idle against a part they cannot mount
2Photoresist qualified at the leading node— firms24–36 mSix weeks of inventory, then a yield decision at every affected fab
1Rare-gas recovery at semiconductor grade— plants18–30 mPrice moves first and volume never does, so no one downstream names it
4Leading-node wafer capacity— sites36–48 mListed for completeness: elastic enough that it is no longer the binding tier

A step enters the ledger on node count and substitution time together. Concentration alone is not a chokepoint if a replacement can be qualified inside the cycle that needs it.

Precedent · tier 1

Gas supply interrupted. Six weeks of inventory absorbed it; price moved, volume did not, and no company at tier 4 mentioned it in a filing.

Precedent · tier 4

Single-site outage. Restart requalified every process step; recovery ran three quarters, two longer than the first guidance allowed for.

What this map is not

A supplier list. Nodes are counted only where two independent records agree, and a tier the desk cannot count is printed as uncounted rather than estimated.
