Bosphorus
The passage stays open by making traffic wait.
Transit record
PortWatch data to Oct 4, 2026What constrains it
Alpha’s profile, written Sep 16, 2026The Bosphorus is constrained by geography before it is constrained by politics: its narrow channel, sharp bends, strong currents, changing weather and dense Istanbul waterfront leave little room for two-way error. Turkey’s Directorate General of Coastal Safety identifies those conditions as the reason for its vessel-traffic and pilotage system (Directorate General of Coastal Safety, accessed September 16, 2026).
Rationing mechanism
Turkey rations movement through operating control rather than auction. The Turkish Straits Vessel Traffic Service opens and suspends traffic by direction, while coastal-safety authorities can hold vessels when navigation conditions require it (Directorate General of Coastal Safety, accessed September 16, 2026). The Montreux Convention preserves merchant transit in peacetime, but that freedom runs through Turkey’s safety procedures rather than around them (Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Foreign Affairs, accessed September 16, 2026).
Incidence
- Black Sea shippersThey bear waiting, rerouting and schedule uncertainty when Turkey suspends movement or limits the direction of transit through the Bosphorus.
- Oil and grain exportersCargoes moving from Black Sea terminals remain exposed to a passage where weather or traffic control can delay the ship carrying the sale.
- Marine insurersInsurers carry the accident and pollution exposure created by large commercial vessels navigating a narrow, winding channel beside Istanbul.
- Turkey’s coastal-safety authorityThe authority absorbs the public cost of keeping the passage safe, including traffic monitoring, pilotage coordination and decisions that delay commercial movement.
